Did you see Saturday night’s “supermoon” where you live? It was cloudy and overcast in Los Angeles, so we didn’t get a glimpse of it.

However, for those of you who might have missed it or want another peek, the larger and brighter than usual moon will will be out again tonight (Sunday March 20th) though smaller than it was last night and not as full. The next Supermoon will take place in about five years in November 2016.

A full moon 14% bigger than usual will illuminate the night sky the evening of Saturday, March 19th. Moonrise is at 7:27 pm EDT. Watch for it.

I’ve posted this article in the past, but sometimes it’s  fun to revisit  old  friends!

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, as well as, author, Robert C. Jameson, MFT, focuses on helping people understand and overcome issues such as anger, hurt, depression, anxiety, love, relationships, boundaries and limiting beliefs, just to name a few. According to the Chinese Zodiac, we say goodbye to the Year of the Tiger and hello to the Year of the Golden Rabbit, which begins on February 3, 2011. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animals signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign and the symbol of the Moon, while the Peacock is the symbol of the Sun, and that together, these two animal signs signify the start of day and night, the Yin and Yang of life.

The Year of the Tiger in 2010 brought about solid returns in gold, copper, silver, and base metals. Astrologists predict that 2011 will see a continued rise in metal, more likely in the base metals as construction materials are in greater demand. Those metals would include nickel, zinc, aluminum, and steel. Prices for corn, wheat, cotton, and other agricultural products will probably also produce stellar returns.

It has been predicted that in the year of the rabbit, stock prices will jump (because of the tendency for rabbits to hop when they run). So, here’s hopping, err, I mean, hoping that this fortune comes true!

The Chinese New Year Calendar – With Its Associated 12 Animals

Unlike Western calendars, the Chinese calendar has names that are repeated every 60 years.  Within the ‘Stem-Branch’ system is shorter cycle of 12 years denoted by animals. The lunar Chinese New Year (CNY) calendar below shows which of 12 animals you are!  Naturally the animal depends on the year in which you were born.  Note: if you were born in January or February you need to check if your birthday was before or after the date of that Chinese New Year. (If it was before this day your animal is the one shown for the previous year).

Though in people’s eyes, the rat is not adorable, and even some Chinese sayings that related to it have almost derogatory meanings, it ranged as the head of the Chinese zodiac. It was recognized as an animal with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility and vitality.

People under the rat sign are usually smart and willing to accumulate wealth and to make efforts to be successful. Throughout their lives, there will be many other people who can bring great fortune to them. Thus despite timidity, most of them are happy and harmonious with others.

The Han people have a custom that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat rabbit meat for fear that the child will be born with a harelip. The newborn is given paintings of children and rabbits representing that the child will have a peaceful and happy life.

People born under the sign of the rabbit are gentle, sensitive, modest, and merciful and have strong memory. They like to communicate with others in a humorous manner. They cannot bear dull life, so they are good at creating romantic or interesting spice. But they lack meditative abilities and often sink money into ideas that may cause failures in their career.

In Spring Festival, people like to paste onto their doors and windows the paper-cut ‘Fu’ character (happiness), combined with the snake twisting around a rabbit as a popular pattern indicating wealth.

People born in the year of the snake often have a good temper, a skill of communicating, and a gracious morality, but they are likely to be jealous and suspicious. One born in the Year of Dog has a straightforward character. In their career and love, they are faithful, courageous, dexterous, smart and warm-hearted. Most women under this sign are appealing but lack stability. Correct this defect and good fortune will come to them.

A pig is not as smart as a dog in understanding human thought. It likes sleeping and eating and becomes fat. Thus it usually features laziness and clumsiness. On the positive side, it behaves itself, has no calculation to harm others, and can bring affluence to people. Consequently, pigs were once regarded as wealth.

People born in the Year of the Pig are honest and frank. They have a calm appearance and strong heart, but they lack patience and independence. As they do not like to talk in a roundabout way, they are thought to be unsociable. Luckily, they are tolerant and optimistic, so not until they become your friends can their virtue, advantages and fidelity to friendship be found.

Recent advice from astronomers – yes, astronomers… not astrologers – suggests that the current Zodiac model should be redesigned. They say that the positions of the Sun and the stars has changed since the signs were determined more than 2,000 years ago. Not only do they propose that the current system is off by about a month, they add in a thirteenth sign, Ophiuchus.

Under the “new and improved” model suggested by some astronomers, there would be 13 signs of different time lengths. Originally, the thirteenth sign was thrown out by the Babylonians when they created the Zodiac system because they only wanted 12 signs. I tend to agree with the Babylonians and apparently I’m not alone.

Rachel Maddow sent a message to the people behind the new zodiac signs:  I’m not changing mine.

Speaking on her January 13th show on msnbc, Maddow took viewers on a whirlwind tour of the changes to the Earth’s magnetic fields that led some astronomers in Minnesota to the new signs. She even managed to bring the Tampa International Airport in Florida into her discussion. Then she dropped a bombshell: her own sign had supposedly changed, from an Aries to a Pisces. Maddow insisted that she was sticking to Aries, thank you very much:

“Despite not believing really in astrology, I insist on remaining an Aries. And never mind the freaking Minnesota Planetarium Society and their big facts about the universe. No matter what they say, I am not trading the mighty Aries ram for some tiny pair of fish and life as a Pisces. I’m not doing it! But I am sort of psyched that even as we tiny little things on the Earth’s crust lament that things on the Earth’s crust, things here in our world can’t change, the very Earth, the universe, mocks us by itself changing and by forcing us to adapt. I love that.”

All this being said, many astrologists are saying that the idea or need for the astrological shift – and the introduction of the thirteenth sign of Ophiuchus - is not a recent discovery. Remember those Babylonian guys who tossed out the idea of thirteen signs to begin with? Well, astrologists note that the Western Zodiac model has already accounted for the changing positions of stars. The Western Zodiac bases the signs from the beginning of the vernal equinox, starting with Aries, then divides each segment evenly by the twelve signs. And like Rachel, I too am still clinging to the idea that I too am still an Aries!

I usually explain it like this: Everyone is psychic, but just like anyone can play the piano, not everyone can play the piano. In other words, we are all psychic, but not everyone uses their abilities because they don’t know they have them or they don’t know how to use them.

When people first start out trying to hone their gifts many struggle because they try to psychically “see,” when in reality their inherent psychic ability may actually be about “feeling,” “hearing” and/or “knowing” information. There are many ways for people who are intuitive to receive information, which are often known as the various “clair” senses.

Clairvoyance: the ability to see things that are not within normal vision. These would be images that appear in the mind’s eye, also known as the third eye.

Clairsentience: the ability which allows a person to feel what others are feeling. This would entail feeling a person’s emotions or feeling another’s physical pain. This can be a very difficult ability to process. This type of ability is also known as empathy or being an empath.

Claircognizance: the ability of having knowledge of people, places, and events that an individual would not normally have knowledge about. An example of this would be a premonition. A premonition is a fore warning of something that will happen in the future. Not all premonitions are about “bad” things either, they can also be about “good news” as well.

Clairaudience: the ability to hear things that the normal ear can’t hear. Usually this would be in the form of hearing the voices of spirits. However, it can also be as simple as hearing the lyrics of a song that will give you an answer or message.

Clairalience: the ability to smell odors that don’t have any kind of physical source. Instances of this could include smelling the perfume or cologne once worn by a deceased relative or friend or the smell of a smoking pipe of a beloved father.

Clairgustance: the ability to taste something that isn’t actually there. For example, Aunt Eva made the best gingerbread men in the whole world when she was alive. While going into the kitchen, suddenly your mouth is filled with the delightful taste of her gingerbread men. This is Aunt Eva’s way of letting you know that she is there.

So, like playing the piano, can we practice to enhance our abilities?
